Migratory goose (Chen migratorius)
Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae
Habitat: freshwater bodies in North America; northern islands in the Arctic Ocean

Along with the ratites and gamebirds, the ducks and their relatives are some of the most ancient on Earth:  their first representatives appeared at the end of the Mesozoic, and survived the massive cataclysm end of Cretaceous, which destroyed the dinosaurs and other reptiles.

In Neocene, this situation repeated itself: ducks and their relatives survived anthropogenic pressures, and climate fluctuations, and other disasters in the world, and again they restored their numbers. Among them there are now exotic species (especially on various islands), but most of them have kept their typical appearance and behavior, as did the migratory goose.

This goose is a descendant of the Holocene Ross’ goose (Chen rossii). It is a relatively small goose, about 60 cm in length, with white feathers, except for the wings, which are black. Its’ ancestor had migrated between the American North and South, and the migratory goose also does this (hence its’ name): it spends winters in the South-East and -West of North America, as well as in the lower reaches of the great Mississippi River, and in summer it lives on the islands of the Arctic Ocean, where it raises its’ chicks.

As with some species of the Holocene wild geese, the migratory goose forms fairly long family ties between males and females, but its nest isn’t very good – an indentation in the ground, lined with grass and fluff of the geese themselves. There, the female of this species of goose lays 4 to 6 eggs and they hatch in about 3 weeks. The male protects the female, brings the female food, but never incubates the eggs itself. In 2 to 3 days, the goslings leave the nest and follow their parents to water; by the beginning of the cold weather, they can fly and fly away with her parents to the South.

The migratory goose is an important source of food for many birds of prey and other carnivores of the Neocene North America, so many geese are killed during the first years of the migration. They eat plants and invertebrates. They can survive for 20-25 years, but most of them are killed much earlier.
